A rich cultural legacy is waiting to be discovered on our Portugal and Northern Spain tours.

Along Europe's Scenic "Yellow Roads"

Step back in time on a journey that spans centuries and borders... and creates an authentic sense of place. Northern Spain captivates with a diversity of landscapes and cultural riches...

Nature lovers revel in the majesty of the spectacular Pyrenees and Picos de Europa. History buffs marvel at San Sebastián, and art and architecture aficionados find paradise in Barcelona and Bilbao. Pilgrims seek miracles along the Camino of Santiago; visitors, Hemingway included, have been invariably moved by the traditions of Pamplona; and lovers of food – and fun – savor the taste of tapas and pinxtos in neighborhood bars and cafés tucked in narrow medieval lanes. In neighboring Portugal, seaside delights pair with robust port wine to bring travelers together as they rediscover monuments to 15th-century explorers like Vasco de Gama, religious sites and an esteemed university. Linking people and places with history and charm, Spain’s unique paradors and Portugal’s elegant resorts offer a legacy of genuine hospitality and service along the way. Read Less

Seven-course feast in a medieval castle

Day 4

Indulge in a sumptuous seven-course feast at a medieval castle in La Seu d'Urgell

Nestled in the heart of the Catalan Pyrenees about a kilometer from the historic town of La Seu d’Urgell, the medieval fortress of Castell de Ciutat has borne witness to the region's history since the 9th century. After serving as home to the Counts of Urgell in the 11th century, it was used for military purposes in subsequent centuries; the marks left by French invasions can be seen on its walls. In the 1960s, the castle and its grounds were purchased from the Spanish government; a hotel was built nearby, and the fortress itself was renovated to host events like the seven-course wine-tasting dinner you’ll feast upon here…

Cruise the Douro River in a traditional rabelo boat

Day 11

In Porto, cruise the Douro River in a traditional, rabelo boat, used for centuries to transport port wine

Before the age of the railroads, the rabelo – a traditional, flat-bottomed Portuguese wooden cargo boat – was the fastest and best means of transporting port wine and other goods between the Douro Valley and the city of Porto, from which the precious Port is exported around the world. The rabelo (or “little tail,” for the long timber piece on the back that’s used to steer the boat), native to the Douro River region, can’t be found anywhere else on Earth… and you’ll take a cruise aboard one on the River Douro during your visit.

Special 2019 Rioja Valley Small Group Departures

2019 Paradors of Northern Spain – Special Rioja Valley Small Group Departures

2019 Only! Five exclusive 2019 small group departures of “Paradors of Northern Spain” – April 26, May 24, June 7, and October 11 & 18 – will venture off the beaten path on days 3 – 5 to Spain’s celebrated Rioja Valley wine region for a two-night stay at the remarkable Marqués de Riscal hotel in Elciego. Designed by Frank Gehry (famed architect of Bilbao’s contemporary Guggenheim Museum), the hotel, the centerpiece of this “city of wine,” built in 2006, is awe-inspiring inside and out, and renowned for its architectural splendors – spectacular ribbon-like curves, titanium roof and asymmetrical walls – as well as for its locally produced wines and Michelin-starred restaurant. Highlights include a private tour of the on-site winery with a tasting; time at leisure to enjoy the hotel’s signature “vinotherapy” spa and the scenery; and a walking tour of the well-preserved medieval village of Laguardia en route to seaside San Sebastián.

Parador de Santiago de Compostela

Night 8 & 9

An overnight stay at one of the oldest hotels in the world

The luxurious Parador de Santiago de Compostela – where you'll spend a night of your journey – originated in 1499 as a royal hospital to give shelter to pilgrims making their way to Santiago along the "Way of St. James"... making it one of the oldest hotels on Earth. In the Middle Ages, the city of Santiago de Compostela was the third most important place of pilgrimage after Rome and Jerusalem. It continues to draw visitors from around the world to view and honor the memory of the Apostle James at the Cathedral that bears his name.

Whether it was the gastronomy, the paradors, fellow travelers, geography, tour director, or pacing, this tour is as close to heaven as I can imagine.

Small Group Departures

Our small group departures, averaging just 24 guests, are designed for travelers who want more time to experience each destination up close and personally. One of the benefits of small group travel is the personalized service and attention you’ll enjoy. Small groups enable our Tauck Directors to spend more time in the places you explore with more opportunities to connect with them. Smaller groups foster camaraderie and lasting friendships among like-minded travelers; you'll engage more closely with local experts and enjoy enhanced insider access, ease of travel and freedom to linger longer.

Before You Go

Travel Documents, Booking and Deposits, and more

No matter where your destination may be, you should bring identification with you; a valid passport is always an appropriate form of identification. Contact your booking agent for information about all necessary documents required for your journey, such as passport and visa information or documentation required for transportation security measures.

Important Information

Health and Activity

You'll find Activity and Pace Levels on all of our trips to give you a better idea of physical activity level – higher numbers mean a more active journey. To fully enjoy most journeys, you should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances; some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot and may include unpaved and uneven surfaces. Please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice.

Protect Your Travel Investment

Deposit Protection Plan

Deposit Protection Plan – Tauck provides a “Deposit Protection Plan” at a cost of AUD $75 per person per tour or cruise. The cost is non-refundable and non-transferable and must be paid at the time of booking with your deposit. It only applies when you cancel your tour or cruise prior to final payment date. The deposit held in credit will exclude fees imposed by third parties in relation to air, rail travel, hotels, transfer or applicable cruise cabins. When booking airfares through Tauck (including when taking advantage of a special offer that includes air travel), standard airline cancellation fees will apply. In some cases, airfares will be non-refundable. In the event of cancellation, these fees will be deducted from the deposit paid, and therefore the credit being held. We will only credit the remainder of deposit to a future tour or cruise booking if you book within 24 months of cancellation of the original Tauck tour or cruise. This offer expires after the 24 months. We will only credit the remainder of the deposit to a future tour or cruise booking Balance Due and it can’t be used as a credit for the initial deposit of a future tour or cruise booking. The Tauck “Deposit Protection Plan” only covers a Tauck tour or cruise and it does not replace Travel Insurance, which we recommend at the time of booking.
