Activity

?

Most days require — or offer the option to engage in — longer or more strenuous walking (often 4+ miles or 8,000+ steps), extended standing, or varied terrain such as hills, sand, or cobblestones. Guests should be comfortable crouching to climb into and out of more rugged vehicles or small planes frequently. Some days may also include active excursions like biking, kayaking, horseback riding, or water sports. While less demanding alternatives may be available, the core experience typically involves sustained physical effort and is best suited to guests comfortable with a consistently active pace.

Experiences of a lifetime

In Southern Africa, wilderness isn't a destination so much as a presence – immense, untamed, and quietly self-assured. In the national parks of Botswana and Zambia, where rivers carve through floodplains and the air seems to hum with life, wildlife still moves as it always has, guided by seasons rather than schedules. To journey here is to enter that rhythm – to observe, to listen, and to understand that wildness endures not in spectacle, but in balance.

On safari, explore some of the continent's most spectacular wildlife reserves, from Botswana's watery labyrinths and Zambia's great river plains to South Africa's dramatic landscapes of coast and savanna, where elephants wander through acacia groves and lions rest in the shade of mopane trees. Stay in luxury tented camps and five-star hotels that blend seamlessly with their surroundings, each offering a front-row seat to nature's unfolding drama. Then, in Cape Town, discover a different kind of beauty – Table Mountain rising above the harbor, ocean light spilling over vineyards and shorelines, and a city alive with color, culture, and charm. View the Okavango Delta by mokoro canoe and helicopter, enjoy sundowners beneath a blazing African sunset, and dine in a private home, in elegant hotels, and under the stars in the open bushveld; this is the Africa you've been looking for. The Okavango Delta by helicopter and canoe

Day 6

One of the world's great wildlife habitats...

Listen to the gentle, rhythmic splash as you are poled along and then attune your ears to other sounds. Long reed frogs will be out enjoying the sun: tiny as your fingertip, they emit extraordinarily loud croaks that resemble Oriental wind chimes. Spiders spin glistening webs above the water; luminous dragonflies hover with whirring wings; game such as red lechwe antelope, reed bucks and giraffes come to drink. But for many, it is the birds of this ornithological paradise that dazzle. Stately egrets, storks, cormorants and even fishing eagles swoop overhead... but for pure drama, the magnificent malachite kingfisher steals the show.

Spend two nights in the Makgadikgadi Pans

Days 7 and 8

Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, largest salt flats in the world

Watching the sun set in the heart of one of the most remote regions of the Kalahari Desert is one of those life-changing experiences – the silence is golden, the spectacle of the panoramic sky nothing short of inspirational. A fitting finale to the day is a sundowner, of course, and dinner.

Belmond Eagle Island Lodge

Nights 5 and 6

A modern, sophisticated sanctuary on a private island at the heart of the Okavango Delta...

Belmond Eagle Island Lodge brings timeless luxury to the Botswana wetlands. High-ceilinged tented rooms flood with light; each has a plunge pool and oversized bed with views of the Delta...
