Cultural journeys and expeditions

Sail north across the Baltic Sea on a journey defined by water — the lifeblood of empires, trade, and exploration for more than a thousand years. From Copenhagen's colorful canals to Stockholm's archipelago of islands, this 7-night cruise traces the waterways that carried Viking longships, Hanseatic merchants, and royal fleets across Northern Europe.

Glide past medieval harbor towns and UNESCO-listed Old Towns, walk along ancient city walls overlooking the sea, and stand before Viking ships raised from the depths of Roskilde Fjord. In Gdańsk, maritime trade built pastel façades and reshaped history; in Tallinn and Helsinki, waterfront capitals reflect centuries of cultural exchange. Enriched by expert insight from your onboard lecturer and culminating in a farewell evening at Stockholm's Vasa Museum, this voyage follows the currents of the Baltic — where history flows as powerfully as the sea itself. Tallinn's Old Town, A Medieval Treasure

Gdańsk, Poland

A fairy tale port with a powerful past

With pastel façades and gabled houses rising above cobblestone lanes, Gdańsk looks lifted from the pages of a fairy tale. But behind its storybook beauty lies a city that has shaped the course of Europe. A powerful member of the medieval Hanseatic League, Gdańsk grew rich on grain, timber, and amber, its soaring Gothic churches and ornate merchant houses proclaiming its maritime might. Centuries later, World War II brought near-total devastation, reducing much of the historic center to rubble. What stands today is an extraordinary reconstruction – a painstaking revival that restored not just buildings, but identity and pride. In 1980, the Gdańsk Shipyard ignited the Solidarity movement, a spark that helped topple communism and redraw Europe's political map. Today, Gdańsk captivates as both beauty and catalyst – a place where cobblestone streets whisper old legends and modern history changed the world.

Cruise alongside a guest lecturer

Aså Övrelid: Interpreting the Baltic world

Throughout your journey across the Baltic Sea, guest lecturer Åsa Övrelid provides thoughtful context that deepens every port of call. A specialist in Nordic and Baltic history, she traces the region's evolution from Viking exploration and Hanseatic trade networks to royal dynasties, shifting empires, and the political transformations of the 20th century. Her engaging storytelling connects the landscapes you sail past with the forces that shaped them — maritime strategy, commerce, cultural exchange, and resilience in times of upheaval. By weaving together centuries of history with present-day perspectives, she enriches the experience both onboard and ashore, illuminating how the Baltic world was formed and why it still matters today.

Roskilde's Viking Ship Museum

Guardians of the fjord

In the late 11th century, five Viking ships were deliberately sunk in the narrow channel of Roskilde Fjord to form a defensive barrier protecting the royal seat at Roskilde. These were not ceremonial vessels but working warships and trading ships built for speed, endurance, and dominance. Nearly a thousand years later, marine archaeologists uncovered their remains beneath layers of silt, launching one of Scandinavia's most important maritime discoveries. Carefully excavated and reconstructed, the ships reveal the sophistication of Viking shipbuilding, the reach of Baltic trade routes, and the strategic military thinking that shaped the region. Today, displayed at the Viking Ship Museum, they offer a rare, tangible connection to the seafaring culture that defined an era — and to the waters your journey now traces.

Tauck Exclusive – Evening at the Vasa Museum

Exclusive reception and dinner for Tauck guests only at Stockholm's Vasa Museum

One of the world's mightiest vessels when built for Sweden's celebrated royal fleet in 1628, the ornate warship Vasa infamously sank to the bottom of Stockholm Harbor immediately upon its launch. Finally raised after more than three centuries in 1961, the well-preserved ship is now the centerpiece of the most-visited museum in Scandinavia... and will be your treasured dining companion during Tauck's exclusive, private reception and dinner at the Vasamuseet (Vasa Museum) in Stockholm.
