Early-opening visit to The Hermitage

Day 10

Exclusive, early-opening tour of The State Hermitage Museum

Comprising a complex of six historic buildings along Palace Embankment in St. Petersburg – including the former Winter Palace of Russia's ruling Romanov family – The State Hermitage Museum ranks among the greatest museums in the world. Although only a fraction of its vast holdings, including the world's largest collection of paintings, is on display at any one time, its exhibits encompass works from the Stone Age to the 21st century. On your privately guided, early-opening tour of this extraordinary institution, you'll enjoy a special visit to the Impressionists Gallery, displaying works by artists including Monet, Renoir, van Gogh, Cézanne, Gaugin, and Degas.

"Tchaikovsky Night" in St. Petersburg

An unforgettable "Tchaikovsky Night" of opera & ballet at L'Europe

A heady mix of art-nouveau elegance, captivating live music and fine artisanal fare define the world-renowned L'Europe restaurant in the Belmond Grand Hotel Europe in St. Petersburg. Marvel at the stunning stained-glass and carved wooden balconies. Take your time over mouth-watering cuisine. Established in 1905, L'Europe is perfectly seasoned… the ideal setting for a "Tchaikovsky Night" dinner. Enjoy a four-course feast, with wine and beer included; you'll be entertained by opera singers, dancers from the Mariinsky Ballet or another local company – and the music of Russia's most beloved composer.

The sights were spectacular like the Russian Orthodox churches, and the Baltic medieval cities were charming.

Catherine Palace in Pushkin

Day 9

Explore the stunning Catherine Palace in Pushkin, inspired by Versailles

Join us on an excursion to Pushkin (Tsarskoye Selo) to explore Catherine Palace. The Romanov Czar Peter the Great built it for his wife, Catherine I – and like his grandiose summer palace, the Peterhof (a.k.a. Petrodvorets), it was greatly inspired by the French King Louis XIV's Palace of Versailles. Catherine Palace was augmented and embellished by Peter and Catherine's daughter, the Empress Elizabeth, who made it her summer palace, and later by the Romanov sovereign with whom it is most identified today – Catherine the Great. Your guided visit to the opulent palace – extensively restored after sustaining heavy damage during World War II – includes the recreated Amber Room, once symbolic of the alliance between 18th-century Russia and Prussia before being looted by German troops.

A Week in the Baltics small group tour was the perfect way to see and understand these countries. The hotels were superb. The itinerary was just right. Our tour director was knowledgeable and took care of us in every way. He is one of the best of the 27 tours we have taken with Tauck. It was a great week. Carl L. Zielonka, DDS (RETIRED)

Most Memorable Moment:

The Jewish tour of Riga.

Lithuania, Latvia & Estonia, are an educational and beautiful learning opportunity. Helsinki - nice, but not so interesting. St. Petersburg was fascinating, especially The Hermitage Museum & Catherine's Palace. The high speed train from St. Petersburg to Moscow sure beat flying. Moscow, w/ Red Square & the Kremlin-WOW! The Armory Chambers are a 10.

Most Memorable Moment:

The unimaginable opulence of the Russian palaces, cathedrals, palaces and royalty residences compared to the dilapidated farm homes and concrete high rise communist dwellings.
